Ruth Williams was born December 21, 1927, in Haugen, Wisconsin. She married Jerry (Gerald) Miller in 1949 in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin.
She graduated from Washington & Lee High School, Arlington, Virginia in 1945 and attended the National School of Art, and Lake Secretarial School in Washington, D.C. When her children were older, she attended classes at Black Hawk College.
Like many mothers in the ‘50s and ‘60s, Ruth stayed home to raise their four children. This enabled her to share her many gifts as a Cub Scout den mother, Girl Scout leader and member of the YWCA Board of Directors. She was also a long-standing member of Audubon’s P.T.A. Being a Wisconsin girl, Ruth flourished when sitting on a lakeside beach. She ensured all her kids were good swimmers and during summer vacation, the Millers could be seen gleefully taking advantage of their family membership at Lake Harrah.
Later, Ruth worked for seventeen years at Augustana College, retiring in 1993 as an Executive Secretary.
Early in married life, Ruth was a member of First United Presbyterian Church, Rock Island, where she taught Sunday School and served as a Deacon. Since 1988 she attended Community Christian Fellowship and participated in Bible studies, prayer groups, women’s events, and volunteer opportunities. Ruth trusted the Lord as her Savior and as she grew older, out of her love for others, she grew bolder in sharing her beliefs. In addition to raising her family, Ruth’s other accomplishments included sewing, knitting, art projects, tennis, reading and life-long learning.
Survivors are her sister, Beverly Cardinal, Pompano Beach, FL; her daughters and sons-in-law, Jana and Jeff Peterson, Bettendorf; Paula and Ron Roberts, Rock Island; and son and daughter-in-law, Steven and La Sal Miller, Bettendorf; nine grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. Ruth was preceded in death by their son, Mark and her husband, Jerry.
The family would like to thank the Unity Point Hospice caregivers who were a blessing. We urge any who read this to take advantage of their services when needed.
