John G. Kammerer

John George Kammerer, 79, passed away June 24, 2022, at Genesis Medical Center, Aledo.

A Memorial Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday, July 1, at St. Pius X Catholic Church, Rock Island. Inurnment will be at Calvary Cemetery, Rock Island. Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, Rock Island, is assisting with arrangements.

John was born December 1, 1942 in Rock Island, the son of John Joseph Kammerer and Joan Eileen Hegwood.

John was a 1960 graduate of  Rock Island High School, he received a B.A. from Western Illinois University.  He married Kathleen Marie Ruffner who died in November 2020. She is survived by her daughter Jeanne Burian, and two grandchildren, Luke and Emily.

John returned to Rock Island and became involved in social justice issues. He was a former member of the Rock Island Housing Authority and the Christian Care Center, Rock Island. He participated in Democratic party politics and ran for alderman and mayor  of Rock Island City.

In January 2022 he moved to Aledo Rehabilitation and Nursing Home.

John is survived by his cousins, Barbara Kammerer Quayle, Sedona, AZ., and Kay DeMeyer, Rock Island.

John was grateful for his neighbors Susan Pemp, Travis Missildine, Barb and Wally Wallarab and friend Vince Thomas.

He remained in contact with several classmates and childhood friends for many years including his high school classmates Larry Tschappat, Rock Island  and Alan Dockterman, VA,  and his home helpers, Joan and Brenda.
