Erma Martens, 93, a resident of Avonlea Assisted Living in Milan, and a former longtime resident of Reynolds Illinois, went to meet her beloved Savior Jesus Christ early Easter Sunday morning, April 21, 2019.
Funeral services will be 10:00am Saturday at Zion Lutheran Church, Taylor Ridge. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00pm Friday at Wheelan Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, Milan. Burial will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery. Memorials may be left to Zion Lutheran Church, Taylor Ridge.
Erma Seitz was born November 11, 1925 at home in Taylor Ridge, the daughter of George and Emma (Mueller) Seitz. She married Walter Martens at Zion Lutheran Church in Taylor Ridge on September 14, 1946. He preceded her in death on April 4, 2013.
She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Taylor Ridge and the LWML Dorcas Society. For 21 years, she was a cook for the Rockridge School District at the Taylor Ridge and Reynolds Grade Schools, retiring in 1987. She enjoyed quilting, crocheting, embroidery, reading and playing her piano every day up until her death. She helped make hundreds of quilts for local and church charities. For years, she made weekly visits to both the Mercer County Nursing Home and the former Comfort Harbor Nursing Home, Milan, offering music, cheer and conversation to the residents.
Her children and their spouses are Dennis and Phyllis Martens, Andalusia, Sandra and Dean Young, Andalusia, Dallon and Karen Martens, South Bend, Indiana and Esther and Mark Anders, Westland, Michigan; 16 grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren; brothers, Vernon (Darlene) Seitz and Delmar (Jeanne) Seitz.
Thanks to all the special, caring nurses, aides and staff of Avonlea, and also to those at Heartland and Unity Point during her brief illness.
