Dennis G. Mathews

Dennis G. Mathews, 72, of Rock Island, Ill., passed away Friday, August 9, 2019 at home.

Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 14, at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, 3030 7th Ave., Rock Island. Burial, with military honors presented by Moline American Legion Post 246, will be at National Cemetery, Arsenal Island. Visitation will be 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 13, at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Humane Society of Rock Island County or Greater Illinois Chapter of the National M.S. Society.

Dennis was born September 1, 1946 in Rock Island, a son of Glen and Viola Grieme Mathews. He graduated from Rock Island High School, Class of 1964. Following high school, he served honorably in the U.S. Army. He married Vicki L. DeMeyer on October 16, 1982 in Rock Island.

Dennis was a machinist for 27 years for Parr Instrument Co., Moline. In his retirement, he enjoyed a brief career as a dog-walker. He enjoyed following Rock Island High School sports, the Chicago Blackhawks, Chicago Bears, NASCAR, and boating on the Mississippi.

Some of his favorite times were those spent with family. He loved being a grandfather, and adored his grandchildren, to whom he was simply “Pa”.

Surviving are his wife, Vicki, of Rock Island; daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and LCDR Scott Shields, USN, Douglas, Alaska; granddaughters, Shelby Stevens, and her husband Garrett, Wisc., Grace Shields, Wyo., and Isabelle Shields, Wisc.; brother and sister-in-law, Dean and Debra Mathews, Rock Island; nephews, Scott Mathews and Michael Mathews, and his wife McKenzie; several great nieces and great nephew.

His parents, and an aunt, Fern, preceded him in death.
