Ruby Houston Obituary

Ruby L. Houston, 91, Rock Island, IL fell asleep in death on Saturday, March 30, 2024 at Allure of Quad Cities in Moline, IL. Ruby was born on April 29, 1932 in Porterville, MS, the daughter of Alberta Whitsett and Emmanuel Boyd, Lewis H. Brown who reared her. There will be a visitation from 11:00 AM-12:00 PM with a funeral service following at 12:00 PM on Friday, April 12, 2024 at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, Rock Island.  Burial at Pine Hill Cemetery, Davenport, IA.

She married J.V. Houston in Birmingham, AL, she moved to Rock Island, IL in 1966. She worked at the Fort Armstrong Hotel, I-80 Truck Stop restaurant in Walcott, IA. And back in the days the old Woody’s Clover Club on 9th St in Rock Island. For many years, Ruby worked as in-home caregiver for the elderly.

Ruby was a nice, loving and caring person who treated everyone with respect. She was a woman of faith – she was baptized at an early age in Porterville, and then rededicated to Christ in her later years in Moline. Ruby also enjoyed celebrated God by listening to Gospel music.

She liked to exercise, lifting weights every day and going on morning walks through Sunset Park. In her spare time, she loved going to car shows. She also enjoyed playing the lottery, going to the casino, and being with family and friends.

She leaves to cherish her memories her children who took very good care of her, James Houston and Martha (Earl) Nimmers, both of Rock Island, IL; siblings, Ramson Brown, Scooba, MS; Willie (Maggie) Brown; Laura (James) Johnigan; Dora (Eddie) Wilson; Alberta Hickman and Jessie Brown Pollard; all of Porterville; a host of other loved ones including grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

Ruby was preceded in death by her parents; sons, Emmanuel (Brown) McConnell and Willie Houston; daughter, Octavia Huge; grandchildren, Kylan Houston and Latisha Price; siblings, Annie Friday, Abb Brown, John Emmit Mays, and James Brown.
