John Hayes, 80, of Rock Island, passed away on Wednesday June 23, 2010 at Trinity, Rock Island. A Time of Remembrance to celebrate 80 years of life will be held at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Rock Island, with visitation on Friday from 10:00am to 10:30am. Graveside services will be held at 11:00am in the National Cemetery, Rock Island, with Military Honors presented by Moline American Legion Post 246. Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Rock Island by 10:30am. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or American Kidney Fund. John Hayes was born on January 10, 1930 in Salisbury, MO., the son of Guy and Anna Hayes. He married the late Nellie Wilkerson on February 16, 1950. John was a United States Army Veteran having served in the Korean War. Mr. Hayes had been employed for over 40 years at John Deere Harvester, East Moline. John was a professional hunter and dog trainer for many years. He was also known as the “Bread Man”, he would load his truck with Dolly Madison goods and let the children all around Rock Island neighborhoods help themselves to the treats. He enjoyed listening to the down home Blues and he loved his Chrysler’s. John leaves to cherish his memories, Sons, Jerry (Linda), Johnny (Doris) Hayes, all of Davenport, Billy (Sylvia), Larry, Guy Hayes, all of Rock Island; daughters, Toni Walker, Moline, Pearl and Lavern Hayes, both of Rock Island; brothers, Fred Hayes, Kansas City, MO., Floyd Hayes, Moberly, MO.; sister, Clocile Hayes, Fayette, MO.; brothers in laws, Martin, Moten and George Wilkerson; sister in law, Hattie J. Stewart; a host of nieces and nephews, including a special nephew, Jamie Brown, Rock Island. John was preceded in death by his parents; his devoted wife of 60 years, Nillie Hayes; daughters, Jillanne and Bettysue; brothers, Lawrence, Virgil, Eugene, Carl, Billy and Max; sisters, Aileene, Anna Lu, Earline; and a granddaughter, Jessica N. Walker. The Hayes family wishes to thank the following specialist who cared for John in his last days. Dr. B.
