Annie Josephine “Jo” O’Dowd, 96, a resident of Avonlea Cottages, Milan, formerly of Rock Island, died Tuesday, June 1, 2010 at Trinity Rock Island. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Friday at St. Pius X Catholic Church, Rock Island. Burial is at Calvary Cemetery, Rock Island. Visitation is 9:00 a.m. until service time Friday at the church. Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Rock Island is assisting the family. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association. Annie Josephine Carr was born on March 31, 1914 in Galway, Ireland, a daughter of Patrick and Annie Killian Carr. She was united in marriage to Cecil O’Dowd on May 25, 1948 in Lucan, Ireland. He died on April 24, 2010. Jo received her nursing degree from the Mater in Dublin, Ireland. She immigrated with her family to the United States in 1958. She was employed as a registered nurse by St. Anthony’s Hospital, Rock Island and later by the State of Illinois at the East Moline and Galesburg State Hospitals. Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Geraldine and Thomas Freund, Austin, Tx., and Pauline O’Dowd-Jackson and Larry Jackson, Battle Creek, Mich.; four grandchildren, Thomas Freund, Jr. and Jacqueline Freund, both of Austin and Joseph O’Dowd-Jackson and Ashley O’Dowd-Jackson, both of Battle Creek; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Carmel Carr, Salt Hill, Galway, Ireland. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil; a son, Raymond; daughter, Anne; brothers, John and Ronnie Carr; and sisters, Sister Matilda Carr, Pauline Faller and Noreen Duncan. The family would like to extend their appreciation to all the staff at Avonlea Cottages in Milan for all their care and attention over the last few years.
