Joan A. Gang, 84, of Rock Island, died Thursday May 6, 2010, at Trinity Pathway Hospice, Bettendorf, IA. Services are 10:00 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Rock Island. Entombment will be at Calvary Mausoleum, Rock Island. Visitation will be 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, 3030 7th Ave., Rock Island, where a rosary will be recited at 4:00 p.m. Monday. Memorials may be made to either St. Mary’s Catholic Church or to the Rock Island Music Association. Joan was born July 19, 1925, in Rock Island, the daughter of Charles VanHoorebeke and Josephine Brady VanHoorebeke. She was a graduate of the Villa de Chantal, Rock Island, Class of 1943. She was proud to be a “Villa” girl. Joan married Charles F. Gang, Jr., on June 29, 1946, in Rock Island. He preceded her in death on October 29, 2007. In earlier years, she worked for Modern Woodmen, Rock Island. Later, she worked as a secretary for 14 years with the Rock Island School District at Rock Island High School and Denkmann School. She retired in 1986. Joan was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Rock Island. She and her late husband were both very active volunteers for many years with the Rock Island Swimming Association. They also enjoyed traveling to the Naples, Fla., area for many years, and family vacations. Her family and grandchildren were of great importance to her. She will be greatly missed and remembered as a loving wife, mother, and “best friend” by all. She was an avid reader, St. Louis Cardinals fan, and loved playing Bridge with her husband and many friends. She also enjoyed teaching Rock Island students how to play Bridge. Surviving are her children (and spouses), Judith (Orris) Groenenboom, Mechanicsburg, PA, Janet (Cruz) Ortega, Rock Island, Teresa (Peter) Cone, Rock Island, Stephen (Mary) Gang, Rock Island, and JoEllen Sloan, Rock Island; grandchildren, Andrew (Stacy) Groenenboom, Amanda (Gregory) Mullen, Alex (Rachael) Ortega, Joseph Ortega, David (Jessica) Barker, Gregory (Audie) Barker, Paul Barker (and fiance’, Nicole Garvey), Emily Gang (and fiance’, Jeffrey Trask), Abigail Sloan, and Jeffrey Sloan; and nine great-grandchildren. Her parents and husband preceded her in death.
