Richard W. McCarthy, 85, of Rock Island, Illinois passed away Saturday, April 26, 2008 at Trinity Pathway Hospice, Bettendorf, Iowa. Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, 3030 7th Ave., Rock Island, where a Christian wake service will be held at 7:00 p.m. The wake service will be followed by the Father Edward J. Bader Assembly Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus chalice presentation. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday at St. Pius X Catholic Church, Rock Island, where he was a long standing member. Burial will in Calvary Cemetery, Rock Island, where the Moline American Legion Post 246 will present military honors. Memorials may be made to St. Pius X Catholic Church or to Alleman High School, Rock Island. Richard McCarthy, known as “Dick” or “Mac”, was born on December 17, 1922 in Rock Island. His parents were John J. McCarthy, Sr. and Margaret J. Meehan McCarthy. His siblings, Francis J. McCarthy, Margaret Mary Pryma, Sister Francis Clare McCarthy, O.S.F., and R. Barry McCarthy preceded him in death. He is survived by his brother, John J. McCarthy, Jr., Long Beach, California; several cousins, including, Elizabeth Meegan, Moline; numerous nieces and nephews; his family at McCarthy, Callas, Fuhr & Ellison, P.C., and his farm family. Richard McCarthy graduated from St. Ambrose College in 1943. Richard served in W.W. II as part of the 771st Field Artillery and later the 26th Infantry Division. He earned a Purple Heart and four Bronze Stars. He participated in the invasion of Europe at Utah Beach and also fought at the Battle of the Bulge. Following his Honorable Discharge from the U.S. Army, Richard attended DePaul University in Chicago, where he received his law degree. In 1950, Mr. McCarthy accepted a position as Assistant State’s Attorney in Rock Island. Shortly thereafter, he accepted a position in private practice with the law firm of Bozeman, Moran and Klockau. He continued in private practice with Robert Klockau and Bernard J. Moran for many years. In 1997, he founded the law firm of McCarthy, Callas, Fuhr & Ellison, P.C., where he was actively practicing up to several weeks prior to his death. Richard McCarthy was licensed to practice in both Illinois and Iowa and was a 50 year plus member of the Illinois State Bar Association. He was also one of the original shareholders of Attorneys Title Guaranty Trust fund. Mr. McCarthy was also very active in Democratic politics serving as a precinct committeeman for over 40 years. He served as a director and officer at Illinois Casualty Company from 1952-2008.
