Ernest H. “Chief” Voss, Jr., 61, of Moline, died Saturday, April 12, 2008 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Iowa City, Ia.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Rock Island. Burial will be in the National Cemetery, Arsenal Island, where military honors will be presented by Moline American Legion Post 246. Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday at the Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, 3030 7th Ave., Rock Island, where a rosary will be recited at 4:00 p.m. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
Ernest was born on August 16, 1946 in Davenport, a son of Ernest and Betty Jane Johnson Voss, Sr. He married Mary Ann Hartman on October 1, 1971 in Rock Island.
Chief worked for his family’s Voss Brothers Express and Storage and then owned and operated Voss Moving and Storage, Rock Island. He later worked for Jacobson Warehouse Co. in East Moline.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Vietnam War. Chief was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Rock Island, the Moline American Legion Post 246 and the V.F.W. Post 2153, Moline. He enjoyed fishing, camping, gardening and caring for his granddaughter, Izzy.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann; daughters, Mary Beth DeBaillie and her husband, Russ, Orion, Kristy Voss and her fiancé, Matthew Kean, Rock Island; son, Ernest R. “Scooter” Voss, Moline; granddaughters, Isabella “Izzy” Kean and Amelia DeBaillie; brothers and sisters (and spouses), Michael (Pat) Voss, Moline, Kate (Jim) Shively, Belleville, Ill., Barb (Greg) Bauer, Fort Worth, Tex., Kenny Voss (Nancy Logue) Sherrard and Thomas (Tina) Voss, Hillsdale; several nieces and nephews and his best buddy, his dog Sandy. He was preceded in death by his parents.
