Durward J. Long, Sr., 80, of Silvis, died Thursday, April 10, 2008 at Genesis Medical Center, Illini Campus, Silvis.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 15, at First Presbyterian Church, 777 25th Avenue, East Moline. Visitation with the family will be from 10:00 a.m. until service time Tuesday at the church.
Inurnment will be in the National Cemetery, Arsenal Island, 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 16, where military honors will be presented by Moline American Legion Post 246. Those wishing to attend may meet at the Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, 3030 7th Ave., Rock Island at 10:00 a.m. to follow to the cemetery.

Durward J. Long, Sr., was born on July 23, 1927 in Moline, the son of George D. and Mabel Jamieson Long. He married Waunita Johnson on August 16, 1952 in East Moline. She died January 3, 2008.
He graduated in 1945 from United Township High School. He went on to earn his Bachelor’s degree from Augustana College in 1949 and his Juris Doctor from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign in 1953. Durward served in the U.S. Navy during W.W. II.
Durward practiced law for over 50 years in the Quad Cities area. He was qualified as an attorney and counselor to practice law before the Supreme Court of Illinois; United States Court of Appeals (7th Circuit) and the Supreme Court of the United States of America. He later taught at Kaplan College in Davenport.
He served as editor of the University of Illinois Law School Law Forum. He was a member of Phi delta Phi. Durward served as President of the United Township High School Board; President of Bethany Home Board; President of the Child Care Association of Illinois; President of the Rock Island County Bar Association and on the Board of Directors for Union Federal Savings and Loan. He also served as legal counsel for the City of East Moline and on the Illinois State Bar Ethics Committee.
During his career, Durward was involved with the Kiwanis Club; Legal Aid in Rock Island County; the Illinois State Bar Association; the American Civil Liberties Union. He was a member of the East Moline Masonic Lodge and a longtime member of the Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Durward J. and Gail Long, Jr., Davenport; daughters and sons-in-law, Melissa and Dan Kahle, Springfield, Ill. and Jacqui and Brandt Glasener, Clovis, Calif.; grandsons, Declan and Aidan Glasener, Clovis and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and sisters, Georgia Long and Mabel Margery Long.
