Mollie Parker Montgomery was born in Laurinburg, North Carolina on November 23, 1910, the youngest child of Thomas Wiley Parker and Neta Beacham. She had two brothers Thomas Wiley Parker, Jr. and William Joseph Parker and one sister, Nita Parker Brogdon. She completed high school in Laurinburg and then attended Guilford College in Greensboro, North Carolina. Accompanied by a cousin, Mollie moved to New York City, where she studied at and graduated from the New York Hospital Cornell University School of Nursing in 1936. She subsequently worked at New York Hospital and as a private duty nurse.
In 1940 she spent the winter with her aunt in Florida and there met her future husband, Thomas Candor Montgomery. They married on January 17, 1942 in New York City.
From 1942 through 1961, Mr. and Mrs. Montgomery lived in Arcadia, Florida. Tom Montgomery owned and operated the Montgomery Ranch. In Arcadia, Mrs. Montgomery was a member of St. Edmunds Episcopal Church.
In 1961 they retired to Rock Island near the Montgomery family farm outside of Reynolds, Illinois. Tom Montgomery died in Rock Island on October 13, 1975. Mrs. Montgomery quickly became active in many local organizations including the Senior Board of the Rock Island Visiting Nurse, the Bethany Home Board, the Huber Home Board, and the Tri-City Garden Club. Mrs. Montgomery was also a member of the Augustana College Endowment Society. Mrs. Montgomery belonged to the Trinity Episcopal Church where she was a member of the Vestment Guild and received the Order of the Holy Trinity for her work in the church.
Mrs. Montgomery was an accomplished cook, gardener and needleworker. Friends and family recall her extraordinary cake creations, cookies, handmade doll clothes, and glorious bed of daffodils. Perhaps her greatest gift was connecting with people. Every week her family and friends received clippings about subjects of their particular interest from the three daily newspapers which Mrs. Montgomery read faithfully. Mrs. Montgomery had an active and engaged mind – zipping through crossword puzzles daily – and delighted in keeping track of and connections between generations of friends, former neighbors and family. In her later years she particularly missed her friends, especially her sister Nita, with whom she had discussed everything during their weekly telephone visits.
Survivors include: Elizabeth (Betty) Brogdon Carter, Thomas Wiley Parker III, William Patterson Parker, Col. (ret) William Joseph Parker, Jr. and Jane Montgomery Abernethy Dorn, as well as numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews of whom particular favorites are Jackson and Libby Siegel, twins born to her great-niece Neta Carter Siegel. Mrs. Montgomery was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sister and two brothers.
