Violet M. “Pat” Barnes, 90, of Rock Island, died Friday, March 7, 2008 at her home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday at St. Pius X Catholic Church, Rock Island. Burial will be in the National Cemetery, Arsenal Island. Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, 3030 7th Ave., Rock Island, where a rosary will be recited at 4:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Pius X Catholic Church. The former Pat Kuchan was born on July 26, 1917 in Chariton, Iowa, a daughter of Charles and Mary Polich Kuchan. She married Roy F. Barnes on May 11, 1940 in Melcher, Iowa. He died September 22, 1983. Pat worked during the war years at the Rock Island Arsenal. She later worked for Plantation Package Mart, Rock Island. She was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church and was a member and volunteer with the Trinity Medical Center Auxiliary. She was a former member of the Rock Island V.F.W. Post 1303 Auxiliary. Pat was known for her love of cooking and baking. Her polenta, fudge, pogatica and homemade noodles were a family tradition. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey and Linda Barnes, Milan; son-in-law, Oliver Ketron, Moline; grandchildren (and spouses), Dawn (Don) Deem, Edgington, Greg (Becky) Ketron, Coal Valley, Mary (Matt) Goumas, Mount Prospect, Ill., and Kate (Jeremy) Culp, Odenton, MD; several great grandchildren, a sister, Anne Kuchan, Melcher, Iowa and a brother, Chuck Kuchan, Indianola, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Janice Ketron and sisters, Helen Ragan and Vange Stewart.
