Violet Mae (Stevenson) McDonald

Violet M. McDonald, 92, of Moline, died Tuesday, February 21, 2017 at Hope Creek Care Center, East Moline.  Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, Rock Island.  Visitation will be Thursday from 4-6 p.m. at the funeral home.  Burial will be at Rock Island National Cemetery, Arsenal Island.  Memorials may be made in care of the American Heart Association.

Violet was born in Olmitz, Iowa on January 13, 1925, a daughter of George and Louise Hendee Stevenson.  She married Walter H. McDonald on February 8, 1947 in Rock Island.  He preceded her in death on November 26, 2014.

Violet worked a short time as a welder at the Rock Island Arsenal during WWII.  She later worked for Servus Rubber, Rock Island.

In Violet's earlier years, she played basketball and semi-pro softball, where her nickname was "pee-wee."  She was also an avid bowler and Chicago Cubs fan.

Survivors include her daughters, Deborah (Martin) Yakovich, Andalusia and Denise Strupp, Rock Island; grandchildren, John (Carmen) Yakovich, Michigan, Melissa (Scott) Jordan, Wapello, Iowa, Thomas (Sha Appenzellar) Strupp, Arizona, Matthew (Sara) Strupp, Normal, Ill. and Alex Strupp, Rock Island; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, brother, Robert Stevenson, sisters, LaDonna Webb and Carol Wales and son-in-law, Thomas E. Strupp.
