Josephine "Jopy" G. Mendoza

Josephine G. "Jopy" Mendoza, 86, of Rock Island, passed away Thursday October 12, 2017 at her home.

 Services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 20th at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, 3030 - 7th Ave., Rock Island. Burial will be at National Cemetery, Arsenal Island. Visitation will be 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, October 19th, at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to ARC of the Quad Cities.

 Josephine was born March 19, 1931 in Des Moines, Iowa, a daughter of Seferino and Tadea Gomez Arguello. She graduated from Davenport Central High School in 1950. Josephine and Joseph R. Mendoza were united in marriage on May 31, 1958 in Bettendorf. He preceded her in death on September 5, 2017.

 In earlier years, she worked at Bettendorf Bank & Trust, Desaulniers & Co., Wallace's and the Rock Island Argus and Moline Dispatch. She also was a volunteer for many years with ARC of the Quad Cities.

 She will be fondly remembered as a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She and Joseph enjoyed caring for their children,  bicycling together with Matthew, playing cards, visiting California, Las Vegas, and the casinos, family picnics and making many special memories with family and friends.

 Josephine enjoyed doing restoration projects at home, growing and arranging flowers, reading the newspaper, and crocheting. She enjoyed making homemade tortillas, chili rellenos, tamales, and peach cobbler for her family.

 Surviving are her sons, Thomas Mendoza, Rock Island, Steven Mendoza, and his wife Patty, Dixon, Ill., and Matthew Mendoza, Rock Island; grandsons, Steven Joseph Mendoza and Michael David Mendoza; sisters, Victoria Terronez, East Moline, Ill., Savina Nevarez, LaPuente, Calif., and Tillie Miller, Bettendorf, Iowa; and numerous nieces, nephews, and additional family.

 Josephine was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters, Mary Dahms, Stephina Gutierrez, Mary Ellen Simms, and Modesta Hayes; and four brothers, Jesse, David, Frank and Michael Arguello.
